I Don’t Usually Buy Apple Products…

img_1643…but the iPod Touch has become the first exception to my rule. Now, in terms of computers, a Mac would meet just a small few of my wants and needs, therefore I’m obviously a Windows person. As for the iPod, I’ve always been a supporter of other MP3 Players, especially the Microsoft Zune. Sure it’s not the “fad device” but face it; Microsoft has one totally awesome device right there and it’s not high in price at all. Simple to use, small, and probably the easiest player to throw videos on considering it accepts wmv movies and not some weird format unique for each model iPod. Throw FM radio on top of that and you have an awesome, cost-effective device. (In-fact, the 4GB models are down to $99)

Things however changed when I grew a desire for a Blackberry phone. Having access to my e-mail, instant messenger and the works from anywhere just sounded awesome, but the extra monthly bills for that and the fact I can’t upgrade my phone until October, did not. So that idea went out the window.

So two days ago my Zune got basically owned. You know… the same way a lot of mp3 players die (maybe I should take a poll on this?) the washer machine. I was sick in bed and told my sister she could throw this pile of laundry I had on the floor, but being half dead, half zombie, I forgot I left my French Horn mouthpeice in one of the pockets of the sweaters she had taken. Oh, and the Zune… that too.

Saved me time on washing the mouthpeiece, but the Zune on the other hand looked like it got washed too well. Not only did the little ring around the touch-pad get ripped off, the screen cover was cracked and water was all over the insides. So what did I do? Take it apart, of course. Let it dry out and everything, plugged it into the charger and soon enough it was working again… aside from the fact it needed an exorcist and I didn’t know of any. It would constantly just start spazzing out, making random selections and playing random songs. (It even rated nearly every song in its library and would have purchased more to rate had I any Microsoft Points)

After trying to take it apart again and make sure everything was alright, I gave up and decided I had to decomission it.

I was considering going cheap and getting another Zune because hey, as I said earlier they’re pretty awesome. I also however had the idea of getting something new, this being an iPod Touch.

Now, if you know me, you’d know I never buy anything Apple. I take photos with my friends in the store (sometimes) but that’s as far as it goes. The iPod Touch however is different; unlike the Zune, it makes decent use out of its built-in wifi and gives you access to all the things you’ve always wished you could throw in the palm of your hand or event belt clip: E-mail, News, RSS, Weather, IM, Social Networks, Web, Games, Pandora Radio and loads more. I was even considering posting this entry while on it once I got the device but realized it would take forever being I’m already at what, 551 words now? Sure it was nearly double the cost, but I find it pretty much well worth it. Now I can stand in lines at the movies, looking cool, messaging all my friends with a touch screen. All the kids with their little Samsung Alias and EnV mobile phones will be sooo jealous and I’ll probably get like twenty million girlfriends over the course of five seconds just because they’ll think I’ll buy them one for our one month anniversary.

…of course, they’ll dump me when I lose range of a wifi signal because once you lose internet, you’ve got your music left and everyone has a “just music” device.

Anyways, the iPod Touch is pretty awesome as I’ve said. Personally I find the keyboard a bit uncomfortable for the thumbs in portrait view but I’ll soon get used to it.

An interesting fact I’ve noted is the actual storage capacity of the device is 7GB, said by iTunes. Now, being I got the 8GB one, I’d expect there to be about 7.5 or so available after formatting, but I guess not. I did the math; space used plus space remaining, and I ended up with 7.01GB. (Apple made good use of a round() function) I’m not bugged at all, infact, now I can confuse all my friends; when they ask me which size I got, I’ll say “The seven” and they’ll stare confused and claim no such model exists. Well it does exist, and it’s mine, so gtfo.
